TERM 1 1999

Editorial

Every term Pipalyatjara School reports to the local community in a Newsletter. This production is aimed at Pitjantjatjara speakers with limited English skills. Copies are available through the Anangu Education Workers who work in the school as well as the Clinic, Store and Office. The paper is always very popular and soon disappears. All children 10 years and under were screened for trachoma as part of ongoing health programs to improve community health. The screening will be repeated later and a health program to prevent this disease will commence next term. Preliminary findings indicated over 55% of our students tested had trachoma.
Trachoma can be prevented by taking simple steps. Regular washing of hands and face with soap and water is all it takes. Unfortunately this is a little harder when our school has poor washing facilities and then some distance from the entrance to classrooms. We hope that this situation will be remedied in the near future. We have been waiting a long time for simple things that most schools take for granted.
